New Officials

Whether you are brand new to officiating or an experienced official looking to join WSOA, we are excited to welcome you to our officiating community. Officiating is a rewarding way to stay involved and contribute to the game of hockey.

Getting Started

To get started as a WSOA official:

  • Age of 14 or older by June 1 of the current year (highly recommended to be 16 with a drivers license)
  • Complete all USA Hockey registration requirements
  • Request membership with WSOA

Once accepted with WSOA:

  • Obtain the required officiating equipment
  • Be added to the ArbiterSports WSOA group
  • Participate in mentorship and training opportunities as recommended

Mentorship

WSOA is committed to helping new officials succeed through mentorship, feedback and development opportunities. New officials may be paired with experienced officials and mentors who can provide guidance both on and off the ice. The level of mentorship provided will vary based on prior officiating experience, confidence and demonstrated ability.

Mentorship may include:

  • On-ice mentoring and guidance
  • Off-ice mentoring and feedback
  • Game evaluations and development recommendations
  • Opportunities to work alongside experienced officials

WSOA New Official Clinics

WSOA offers clinics throughout the season to help new and developing officials learn the fundamentals of officiating, prepare for success on the ice and build confidence.

These clinics are designed to provide beginner level instruction that may include:

  • Off-ice learning
  • On-ice skating, positioning and mechanics instruction
  • Opportunities to work a live game with an on-ice mentor
  • Feedback from experience officials
  • Ability to ask questions in a supportive enviorment

These clinics are encouraged for brand new officials and officials seeking additional development or confidence building opportunities. Officials with prior experience or those who are comfortable working games independently may not need to attend, but are always welcome to participate.
